The government has released Rs.541 crore for the industrialisation in the North Eastern Region. To clear the backlog and speed up the industrialisation, an amount of Rs.766 crore have been released up to 31.3.2008, of which Rs.541 crore (approx.) have been released on 29.3.2008 for industrial units in the North Eastern Region.
With the announcement of Transport Subsidy Scheme, the industrialization in these States/UTs did get an impetus but the pace was quite slow.
Ever since the inception of the Scheme till 2004, only Rs.507.61 crore were released in 31 years for North Eastern Region.
In order to promote industrialization in the remote, hilly and inaccessible areas, the Central Government introduced the Transport Subsidy Scheme (TSS) on 23.7.1971.
This Scheme is presently applicable to fourteen States/Union Territories including eight North Eastern States. The Scheme provides for subsidy upto 90% of the cost incurred on transportation of raw material and finished goods, for a maximum period of 5 years.
