Biggest job reduction in March, AMTAC

The U.S. economy suffered a net loss of 80,000 jobs in March, including 48,000 middle-class manufacturing jobs according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Since January 2001, the United States now has lost 3,471,000 U.S. manufacturing jobs and has run a trade deficit in manufactured goods of nearly $3.2 trillion.

"Domestic manufacturing is in crisis and yet the Bush Administration, the presidential candidates, and the Congress still refuse to engage in substantive debate and action to resolve the crisis," said American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition Executive Director Auggie Tantillo.

"Weak U.S. manufacturers were weeded out long ago. Those domestic manufacturers with their doors still open are THE most competitive manufacturers in the world -- yet they are being forced to lay off workers because of uncompetitive U.S. trade policy," Tantillo continued.

"Because of the direct correlation between the trade deficit in manufactured goods and the loss of both market share for domestic producers and millions of jobs for U.S. manufacturing workers, it is incumbent for policymakers to admit that U.S. trade policy is fundamentally flawed and must be changed. U.S. manufacturing still has the drive and vitality to recover and regain its lost market share and jobs. The lack of a level playing field is the only thing standing in our way from doing just that," Tantillo added.

"The struggling U.S. economy is the single most important issue on the minds of American voters and the one of the largest contributors to those economic woes is flawed U.S. trade policy.
