Export of textile & garments surge in Q1

According to the General Department of Customs, Vietnam shipped nearly 5.3 million swimsuits to overseas markets and fetched around US $24.7 million during the first quarter of 2008. A significant boost of 204.9 percent in value and 80.4 percent in volume is witnessed over same period of 2007.

Near about 4,45,000 sets of swimsuit were exported to EU for $1.8 million in the Q1, a year-on-year rise of 134.4 percent in terms of volume and 34.5 percent value wise. Within EU, exports to Italy grew to 272.6 percent, to Spain it went up by 554.2 percent and to Belgium it rose to 243.7 percent in comparison with Q1 of 2007.

The US is one of the hot favourite export destination for the Vietnamese textile and garment manufacturers. This is quite evident from the results decleared by MOIT.

During March 2008, Vietnam exported almost 1.7 million swimming costumes to US and earned revenue worth $7.5 million, a year-on-year boost of 180 percent and 64 percent.

Textile and apparel exports on the other hand, fetched approximately $1.1 billion in first quarter 2008 from this market. Of all products, the export of elastic shirts to the US stood at $338.08 million with 108.42 million pieces.

The export price of trousers to the American market were quoted at nearly $5.37 per piece in Q1, a rise of 5 percent over same period of 2007.

Vietnam is enjoying good export earnings and the entrepreneurs are anticipating a bright future ahead with lot of revenue generation this fiscal.
