A leading retailer of trendy Swedish furniture, IKEA recently announced launching of its new factory in Danville. Although, popular for its contemporary lamps, sofas, beds and pillows, the company has no plans of having its own retail store.
This certainly is a blessing in disguise for the slouching textile and furniture sector of South Virginia where manufacturers have terminated operations rendering thousands of workers jobless.
This new plant called Swedwood started production in February and has already become the industrial arm of IKEA Group. It has hired more than 150 employees for the 930,000-square-foot factory at Cane Creek Centre, an industrial park near the Danville Regional Airport.
The company plans to employ 800 additional employees in the future for its three upcoming factories at the same site.
