By 2012, Mesaieed, will have its own mega petrochemical complex, comprising of four integrated plants that will produce around 2.8 million tons of petrochemical products per year. Qatar Intermediate Industries Holding Company (Qatar Holding), and Honam Petrochemical Corporation of South Korea, are developing this project in 70-30 partnership.
The multi-billion Qatar Petrochemicals Complex (QPCC), will not only target international markets, but would also supply the products to downstream industries in Qatar. The unit will mainly use available liquid feedstock from projects that are presently operating in Mesaieed and Ras Laffan.
The feedstock will use ethane and naphtha, which will be provided by Qatar Petroleum, to produce around 7,00,000 metric tons of polypropylene, nearly 6,00,000 metric tons of styrene monomer and almost 2,20,000 metric tons of polystyrene. The complex will also produce substantial quantities of propylene and aromatics.
Qatar Holding is planning to widen the base for new polymers and intermediate petrochemical products in Qatar through new projects, which will offer ample investment opportunities to Qatari entrepreneurs.
