Unions says 500 more textile jobs to go by 2005 end

With over 2,000 redundancies already, trade union foresee at least 500 more from the textile and leather industries, media agencies reported quoting union leader.

Union leaders feel that reorganization among textile industries came a wee bit late, in fact 20 year behind according to Anton Rozman, a representative of Trade Union of Textile and Leather Industries.

According to him, to stem the job losses a combined approach with state help and provision of business-friendly environment could bring in sacked workers.

Companies have to improve their financials and go for manufacturing new products and adopt technologies.

According to Rozman is manufacturing high-quality products for local use and low-cost products for markets abroad.

Another reason he extended for the sorry state of the Slovenian textile and leather industry was bankruptcies and bankruptcy protection in the textile industry during 2004 and 2005.

However, Rozman is optimistic of decline in bankruptcies in the future, but agrees that workers may lose jobs for unrelated reasons.

Efforts of Textiles, Clothing and Leather Processing Association, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (CCIS) have been at increasing the competitiveness in the field and have adopted measures to that effect.

According to Secretary General of the Association Joze Smole, two sets of measures have been prepared, one internal (managerial) and the other external (that will attract efficient investments).

Sadly, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Higher Education, have not responded to the proposal with typical bureaucratic replies.
