The silk town of Sualkuchi, once famous all over the world for creating spell binding silk clothing has been unable to match its steps with fast moving technologically advance world.

Looking at the excellent craftsmanship of weavers and tremendous potential that silk industry has, the authorities of the region have finally paid attention towards this slowly fading industry.

As a result, the Kamrup district administration in association with North Eastern Council (NEC) and National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Kolkata, has set up the Sualkuchi Institute of Fashion Technology (SIFT).

SIFT is providing complete training to those who aspire to make it big in the lustrous silk sector. All areas are covered, right from innovative designing, product diversification, colour selection to prevailing fashion trends in the market. It aims to widen the outlook of students who wish to target global consumers.

There is a high demand for Sualkuchi silk garment in European markets, however, due to technological stagnation the town fails to meet such demands.

Experts are of the opinion that opening of SIFT has surely made difference, as the artisans have started adopting new techniques and methods, resulting in increased production and innovative patterns.
