Cotton yarn imports surged up 823 tons, recording 156.4 percent year-on-year rise, Government statistics revealed, for August 2005.

Cumulative January through August cotton yarn imports this year, closed at 4,642 tons; a 103.6 percent increase.

Further, statistics infer cotton fabric imports for August stood at 2,173 tons, which grew 115.6 percent, year-on-year basis.

Total January to August cotton fabric imports touched the figure of 9,294 tons, a 108.9 percent growth, year-on-year basis.

Cotton apparel imports reflected an 86.5 percent year-on-year increase at 772 tons in August. Total cotton apparel imports from January through August showed 54.4 percent year-on-year increase at 3,856 tons.

This clearly indicates that domestic apparel and textile market of Brazil has enough capacity to attract a higher volume of cotton based textile and apparel imports, particularly in case of China, which is seen as a major exporter.

Another reason for the surging imports is the strong Brazilian currency Real whose rising exchange rate additionally continues to back the rise in textile and apparel imports.
