Drought, soaring returns on grains and spike on cotton futures market is forcing a number of cotton growers and merchants in Australia to reevaluate their decision to continue cultivation.
Although, cotton crop this year will be bigger, growers have made assumptions on future prospects and have decided to irrigate wheat and oilseeds instead.
However, North Queensland is almost done with its first commercial cotton harvest and the yield is impressive.
With plenty of water supply at disposal, a handful of farmers also participated in the Burdekin cotton trials to see what varieties and farming techniques work best.
After assessing the harvest the cotton project leader concluded that the output was only slightly less than that of the leading producers in northern NSW.
Experts have also suggested that if the right management practices are adopted, growers can attain high levels of yeilds which in turn can lead to a higher production.
