Backed by the state run Sierra Exportadora program, a group of female weavers from Callalli district in the Caylloma province in Arequipa will export a large number of handmade alpaca chullos, scarves and Andean dolls to the US.
The shipment scheduled to be dispatched by late October, will include 2,000 chullos, 2,000 scarves and 500 Andean dolls and will fetch handsome revenue to the female weavers in Peru empowering them to become self-reliant.
These women weavers work at Maquicentro of Callalli, a textile factory which was opened last year with the aim of supporting women by helping them start their own business and generate an income for sustenance.
The factory was equipped with the support of Sierra Exportadora which is essentially a Government program that helps Peruvians expand exports and take advantage of locally made products.
This will not be the first time that such an endeavor has been undertaken, earlier this year too, two shipments of handmade alpaca products were shipped to Austria.
