Peebles-based Holland & Sherry (H&S), one of the prestigious cloth weavers in the world, has designed the world's most expensive tartan, which is fondly being called the 'Champagne of fabrics'.

Mr Brian Wilton, Director, Scottish Tartan Authority, informed Fibre2fashion, "We have registered this product. Tartan, designed by Malcolm Campbell for H&S, depicts the natural and beautiful features surrounding the picturesque Borders' town of Peebles."

Tartan, woven from pure Mongolian cashmere, was developed to celebrate Company's 172 years of operation in the Borders town.

Mr Wilton further explained, "The navy blue of the tartan depicts the River Tweed and the fir green is for the Scots pines that cover the surrounding hills. The black guard reflects the dark shadows cast by the 13th Century Neidpath Castle on the outskirts of Peebles and the burgundy is for the setting sun. The royal blue overcheck fanfares the blue of the Saltire, Scotland's national flag."

Sources report that the fabric will be quoted at about £500 a square metre while the kilts made from this will be priced around £5,000.

The tartan will be launched at November's Dressed to Kilt fashion show in New York, where stars like Sir Sean Connery and Ewan McGregor will walk the ramp in it.
