The Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation has ambitious plans to increase skilled craftsmen in line with the vision to develop and preserve the heritage craft industry. It would put in efforts to identify artisans with high potential and further develop their skills by means of intensive training.

Various initiatives have been envisaged which will be implemented in stages. The positive aspect of the handicraft industry is that the number of craftsmen has been steadily increasing with each consecutive year. It has risen from 3,480 in 2004 to 6,167 at the end of 2007.

The Corporation will lay emphasis on skilled manpower development of artisans, research and development, training along with providing trade incentives and help in marketing and promotional activities to increase the number of skilled craftsmen.

Under the guidance of the Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry, the Corporation would focus on expansion of markets nationally and internationally. It would also assist in market driven product development. The Corporation would also promote usage of modern technology to produce handicrafts.

This will all be done by participating in more and more international handicraft exhibitions and product promotion drives.
