Japan and France have a relation ship going back to more than 150 years. A sister city relation-ship was also established 50 years back between the cities of Kyoto and Paris. To commemorate both, an event has begun from October 17 and is expected to continue till October 26.

The event titled “Eco-Luxury” will focus on bilateral exchanges in fashion lifestyles to create societies oriented towards recycling. The highlight of the forum is the display of a collection aptly titled “ethical fashion”, a trend prevailing in Western fashion capitals.

A week before, from October 9-12, 16 apparel items designed jointly by Japanese and French designers under the theme “Ethical Japan” had been displayed at the Ethical Fashion show in Paris, purportedly the biggest ecological and ethical fashion show in Europe.

Fabrics sourced for ethical garments apart from being manufactured from organic or natural materials also have to comply with principles of fair trade and no sweat shops or children should have been employed in the manufacturing process.

Among the participating Japanese designers are well known names like Akihiko Izukura, a textile designer of renown who designs apparels made from natural raw materials and dyes, along with a “No Waste” philosophy, in which he tries to ensure no waste is generated during the manufacturing process.

Fibre2fashion spoke to one of the Kyoto based organizers, Aura Co. Mr. Michinobu Nonomura, Executive Director of Aura had this to say “"This event is being held to kick start a new relationship between designers and traditional craftspeople in Japan and France.

We are focusing on design exchange between two countries. At the same time we also are focusing on ecological products. It is a part of new project between France & Japan”.

On a parting note he added by saying “Right now it is in early stages to give more details though total plan is for a period extending from 3 to 5 years."
