It seems that, now, teachers and students in all states and union territories will have to make room in their wardrobe for handloom garments! Parliamentary panel has urged the Centre to ask students and teachers to wear handloom dress at least once a week.
Centre has also been advised to enforce this proposal in co-operation with the regional authorities.
This suggestion was made to promote handloom industry and generate interest among youth who are major consumer group for garment industry.
Parliament Standing Committee on Labour applauded the effort and said that this move would go a long way in instilling the use of handloom in the country.
Panel stressed that there should also be proper labelling of handloom and powerloom products so that the consumers are able to differentiate and not get misled.
Besides, a 10-point action plan was also recommended, which includes providing official identity cards to eligible weavers as well as healthcare and insurance, so as too help improve their overall conditions.
