As per the records of Council for Leather Exports (CLE), 567 companies are exporting finished leather from the country. Some of the prominent companies are Tata International Ltd. Mumbai; Model Tanners (India) Pvt. Ltd., Kanpur; Super Tanners Ltd., Kanpur; Farida Prime Tannery Pvt. Ltd., Chennai; Calico Trends, Kanpur; Allahabad Tannery, Kanpur; Drish Shoes Ltd., Panchkula; KCK Exports Ltd. Kanpur; Superhouse Ltd., Kanpur and Allied Exims, Kanpur.
As per CLE records, the total export of finished leather from the country during 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 was 5671 lac sq. ft., 6507 lac sq. ft and 6441 lac sq.ft. respectively.

Duty Drawback on finished leather during 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 has been extended at the rate of 6.6%, 7.5% and 6.3% respectively when CENVAT facility is not availed and 1.6%, 1% & 1% respectively when CENVAT facility is availed.
Since, the Drawback is a scheme to rebate input stage duties in relation to any goods manufactured in India and exported, no surplus accrues to the Government if any goods are exported under claim of this scheme.
