BWMB to support 'Sheep of the Year' competition

The British Wool Marketing Board will be the main sponsor of the 2009 'Sheep of the Year' competition run in North Wales.
The 'Sheep of the Year' is a competition open to breeders in North Wales who exhibit their animals at the region's main agricultural shows. It was successfully launched in 2006 and is credited for raising sheep entries at most of the eligible events.
Sheep being exhibited at a total of 11 shows are eligible to compete for the overall title which is awarded on a points basis.
The first show providing qualifying points is the Lleyn & District Agricultural Show on 4th May. Other eligible shows include Caerwys, Dyffryn Ogwen, Anglesey, and Denbigh & Flint. The competition comes to an end at the Cerrigydrudion Show in September.
Points are awarded according to placements in breed categories and in the interbreed finals. The competitions are free to enter. Exhibitors simply need to turn up at as many of the eligible shows as they can and start collecting points. Last year's winners were father and son team Huw and Melfyn Williams of Pengroes, Brynsiencyn on Anglesey who have a flock of North Country Cheviots.
Gareth Jones, Producer Relations Manager with the BWMB said: ” We're pleased to be supporting the 'Sheep of the Year' competition for 2009. “We're aware of the strong breeding traditions in North Wales and are happy to support these sheep breeders through our sponsorship.”
