Flip-flop shades of phototropic dyes unveiled

1 min read

Phototropism is a phenomenon confined to reddish yellow dyes. Dyes that are reddish yellow in nature change their hues on exposure to light.

The molecules of the dyes are capable to flip from one form to another by absorbing energy from light. Chromism is a process of reversible color change in a chemical compound.

It is based on the changes in the excitation levels of electron levels within the molecule. This is induced by various external stimuli which alter the electron density of the molecule.

The concern of the dyer is to accurately match a dichroic standard with different dyestuffs, when the target specification includes two light sources.

The problem for the retailer with such type of garments is the consumer returns the clothing, due to non-matching colors of the apparel which seemed to be matching inside the store and not outside.
