Jetpur in the state of Gujarat is famous since decades as a fabric processing centre. But now it is in the eye of a storm. The Collector of the district has issued a show cause notice to 37 process houses for creating environmental pollution.
These units are operating their plants without the permission from the Gujarat State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB). This step has been taken after farmers from the surrounding areas raised a hue and cry against the environmental destruction.
These fabric processing plants were found to be releasing untreated effluents in to the open and rivers without treating the same, due to which the ground water was getting polluted, which was harmful for the surrounding farms.
