Though the handicrafts industry in the country is witnessing downward trend since last two years, Gujarat has recorded a remarkable rise in the sales of handicrafts, domestically as well as internationally.

The handicraft industry of Gujarat has remained unaffected by the global economic downturn and is enjoying stability and has strengthened in recent months. State's handicraft industry survives largely on domestic sales.

Though many of the artisans in the state do both domestic and exports sales directly or through Non-Governmental Organizations, the handicraft products marketed by the Gujarat State Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation's, 'Garvi Gurjari' and by the individual artisans as well, have seen a phenomenal increase in sales.

Gujarat has no relevant data pertaining to exports of individual artisans who account for 90 percent of the domestic as well as exports sales. The sale of these products at various outlets of Garvi Gurjari across the country has increased noticeably from Rs. 6.96 crore in 2005-06 to Rs. 14.35 crore in 2008-09. Garvi Gurjary markets 10 percent of the total output from the state.

Handicrafts sales from across India have fallen drastically, particularly in the last few months and have dwindled from Rs.17,536 crore in the year 2007-08 to Rs. 10, 891 crore in 2008-09.
