Now that a new Union Government is in place, India is expected to take up the serious matter of non-tariff barriers imposed by the US, to restrict imports of goods into that country and which is also hampering free flow of goods.
A non-tariff barrier is a covert restriction on imported goods as governments may not wish to be seen to restrict trade but can do so by introducing regulations, such as product labelling laws, which make it more difficult to import into that country.
From amongst the sectors which have been affected by these protectionist measures in disguise are textiles, dyes and chemicals, agriculture commodities etc. The US is India's biggest overseas trading partner with exports of textile topping the list.
