Recently a garment exporter's body had written a letter to the new Union Minister of Textiles requesting it to bring the textile sector under the scope of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).
This has been opposed tooth and nail by the 'Centre of Trade Unions' (CITU) which calls it an unwarranted move and expects the industry to take advantage by taking recourse to the low minimum wage under the scheme.
They aver that the sector would lay-off workers earning higher wages and replace them with workers whom they would have to pay just Rs 80 per day paid under the scheme in lieu of Rs 175 per day that is the minimum wage that is paid today.
