According to statistics published by Huangpu Customs, textile and garment exports from Dongguan City reached US $1.82 billion in the first half of this year, representing a 17 percent year-on-year decline.

Among them, exports of clothing and accessories registered US $1.16 billion, down 17 percent year-on-year; exports of textile yarn and fabric products fetched $660 million, down 19 percent year-on-year.

Dongguan's major textile and garment export markets are Hong Kong, the United States and the European Union, but exports to these markets declined in the first half, while exports to Japan rose slightly.

In the first half, Dongguan's textile and garment exports to Hong Kong, the United States and EU amounted to $730 million, $320 million and $290 million, declining 19 percent, 2.6 percent and 39 percent, respectively.

Shipments from the sector to Japan stood at $90 million, an increase of 5.1 percent. Exports to the four major markets accounted for 79 percent of Dongguan city's total textile and garment exports value.

Customs analysis points out that uncertainty of domestic market and international market results in unclear development prospects of the textile industry, as the international financial crisis continues to spread.

Clothing enterprises have to face a number of barriers put up by developed countries, such as green environmental protection and quality standards, which are impediments in the path of exports.
