Speedo LZR Racer swim suit likely to be banned

Jul '09
Since the launch of the Speedo LZR Racer swim suit, world swimming records are being broken with amazing regularity which is leading a group of nations to call for a ban on wearing of these suits in swimming championships by 2010.

The Speedo suit has NASA designed polyurethane panels which enables a swimmer to add buoyancy and speed in the swimming poll which has helped swimmers break around 135 records in the last 17 months.

The Swimming International Federation is planning to hold a vote for banning the swimsuit and it is expected to sail through with a thumping majority as most of the countries support the move to ban the swim suit from international events.

The leading swimming nations, including USA, Australia, Canada, Britain, France and The Netherlands, are currently putting together a broader proposal to the to set firm limits to introduction of swimsuit technology.

The previous version of rule SW10.7 only banned the use of "any device'' that aids speed buoyancy or endurance but now includes the specific reference to swimsuits.

The new rule pending approval, will read as “No swimmer shall be permitted to use or wear any device or swimsuit that may aid his/her speed, buoyancy or endurance during a competition (such as webbed gloves, flippers, fins, etc.)".
