The Union Minister of Textiles, Mr Dayanidhi Maran announced that the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) will be setting up cotton depots in the state of Tamil Nadu at Madurai and Coimbatore.
These depots, he said, will be opened in the new cotton season and cotton procured from Gujarat and Maharashtra will be stored, to be later on sold to the textile mills of the state.
CCI would make use of godowns of some local textile mills to store the cotton. This step will help bring down the cost of production by at least Rs 2 per kg as it will mean savings in transportation costs for the textile mills.
Tamil Nadu is the biggest cotton consuming state in the country, but cotton production in the state is inadequate to meet demands, so cotton has to be brought in from Northern and Western India, which increases the cost of production.
