Various handicraft products of Orissa are going to experience 'Bar Coding System' soon, as the state owned Orissa State Co-operative Handicrafts Corporation which promotes sales of handicraft products inside and outside the state, plans to introduce this system for handicrafts from the state.

Item indexing has already been introduced by the Corporation for products manufactured by it. This Bar Coding System will help the sale outlets of the Corporation (Utkalika) to get rid of the manual system of register maintenance.

It will also assist in rapid assessment of stock position and accelerate the order placing process for stock replenishment in the stores. The system will also prove to be useful for the verification of products of the Crporation and their prices in case of returned items.

The government intends to renovate the major sales outlets of the Crporation, in which the high transaction Utkalika outlets in Cuttak and Bhubaneshwar will be renovated and will be equipped with computer and other devices.

The Branch Managers of the 13 outlets of the Corporation were offered orientation training, organized by the state industry department, under a course specially designed by the Institute of Entrepreneurship Development (IED), Bhubaneshwar.

The training was for the skill up-gradation of the Branch Managers pertaining to the sales of the items and improving customer environment in the outlets. The Corporation witnessed sale of Rs. 6.08 crore in 2007-08 and of Rs. 6.22 crore in 2008-09, while for the fiscal 2009-10 it has targeted to achieve Rs. 8 crore.

Similarly, a procurement policy focusing on the local artisans and craftsmen producing local products will also be followed by the Corporation, along with restructuring manpower of the Corporation by offering voluntary retirement to some employees.

The corporation that has about 111 employees at present is also contemplating to outsource certain services.

As efforts will be made to make use of the Utkalika's brand value, the Corporation is negotiating with the Orissa Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) and Boyanika (Co-operative stores run by the textile and handloom department), in order to increase the sales of handicraft products.
