The sharp drop in jute prices in the last fortnight has infuriated the jute farmers in the northern districts of Bangladesh, despite the good quantity of crop that have grown. Prices of jute have fallen by Tk 10-15 per kg in the last few days.
Jute farmers in the four northern districts in total cultivated jute on 18,674 hectares of land by sowing good and high yielding qualities of jute and also produced a bumper crop, but were hamstrung by scarcity of water, needed to rot the jute.
High quality varieties like Tosha have yielded 10-12 bales per hectare, while local varieties have delivered 7-9 bales per hectare, but the farmers in the four districts are unhappy due to the steep fall in prices.
