Gujarat set to become hub of technical textiles

With the Union Textile Ministry and also the Government of Gujarat, evincing interest in the development of technical textiles, this lucrative but yet not fully explored sub-sector is set to receive a boost in Gujarat.
Currently, revenues from the technical textiles sector in the country totals to Rs 260 billion, which is projected to shoot up to Rs 520 billion in the next 3-4 years, and both the Central as well as the Gujarat Govt have announced subsidies for the same.
In the Industrial Policy-2009, Gujarat Govt had announced a 6 percent interest subsidy on plant and machinery for technical textile, along with which, the Central Government is also giving 10 percent credit-linked subsidy and 5 percent interest subsidy.
While speaking to Fibre2fashion, Mr Chandan Chatterjee Director, iNDEXTb said, “Almost 10 to 15 technical textile units are on starting stage and companies like Ginni Filaments Ltd. have already started their operations”.
“Center for Excellence in Technical Textiles is likely to be set up in Surat very soon for which details are been worked out by the Government of Gujarat in collaboration with South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industries (SGCCI)”, he said.
These units will manufacture medical textiles, parachute textile, geo-textiles, laminated fabrics, fabric material for bullet proof jackets and for applications in agriculture, automobile and packaging.
According to Mr Chatterjee, the total investments in this sub-sector are expected to touch Rs 12 billion in Gujarat alone.
