Leather sector cries for attention, demands policy paper

After the announcement of the Textile policy, the tannery owners of Pakistan have been clamouring for a similar five-year National Leather Policy to stimulate the leather sector of the country and control de-growth in exports from the sector.

The leather sector is the second highest revenue generator amongst exports from the country and according to experts has the potential to reach US $5 billion in exports from the current levels of just below $ one billion.

Exports of leather products had plummeted by an awesome 29 percent in the previous fiscal year (2008-09). The sector has also demanded incentives as provided to the Indian leather sector under its 10th and 11th five year plans.

The sector is also urging the government to announce sites for leather and footwear parks at various places in the country in consultation with stake holders from within the industry and demanded setting up of a footwear design and development centre.

The leather industry is also requesting the government to allow refinance at lower rate of 5 percent, exempt tanning industry from load shedding, duty free import of tanning and footwear machinery and matching grant for setting up effluent treatment plants.
