Country to see surge of foreign apparel buyers this year

Bangladesh is likely to see the arrival of hundreds of international buyers in the current year as two major trade bodies will organize two important international apparel trade shows in November.
During the last fiscal, a huge number of buyers visited the country to buy low-priced garments, which resulted in garment exports outperforming in a number of international markets. Between November 5 and 7, BATEXPO-09' will be organized under the auspices of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
As Bangladesh is becoming a lucrative place for global apparel traders, a large number of buyers from Japan, South Africa, Mexico and Brazil would come to Bangladesh to buy low priced basic apparel products in the annual exposition, expected BGMEA President Mr. Abdus Salam Murshedy.
Many other countries such as USA, EU, Australia, Canada, China and India are also expected to participate in the trade event. 11 stalls of the 20th BATEXPO have already been booked by the foreign buyers.
Another major trade body, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) will also hold its 5th 'Knitexpo-09' at Dhaka which will open on November 2 and will continue till November 4, informed a BKMEA official.
In order to invite the buyers and investors from the international markets to participate in the annual event, the BKMEA president Mr. Fazlul Hoque has recently visited Japan and Hong Kong, and will visit South Africa and Botswana by the week end.
Nearly 80 foreign buyers have already confirmed their participation for the trade show, which will make Knitexpo-09, the biggest event of the year.
As per the data of Export Promotion Bureau, in the fiscal 2008-09, the country has exported $6.429 billion worth of knitwear and $5.918 billion worth of woven items recording a growth of 16.21 percent and 14.54 percent respectively, compared to the corresponding period of the earlier year.
