APTMA may give call for nationwide strike

The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) is planning to observe a countrywide strike within the next couple of weeks, which in all probability affect exports from the sector, which are already in a distressing situation.

The main reasons given for the strike call are the electric and gas outages, which the government has not been able to solve despite repeated pleas from the whole textile sector. The textile minister has repeatedly assured the sector, but till date a solution has not been found.

APTMA will be calling a meeting of all its members and in consultation with them; the strike call would be given. The purpose of the strike is to remind the government to find a resolution to all vexed issues as announced in the textile policy.

Fibre2fashion spoke to Mr Tariq Mehmood, Chairman of APTMA, who said, “We are just trying to wake up the government to the problems we are facing. Again it was part of textile policy which was declared three months back about providing facility to the industry related to power and gas crises which is a very crucial”.

“Almost 30 percent of textile industries are suffering from the crisis such as raw material, electricity and gas and meetings to resolve the issue are conducted from time, but any type of positive results are yet to materialize”, said another official.
