Chennai Fashion Week to bring in international flavor

Nov '09
Chennai, which is the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu, is soon to become a hub of Indian and international fashion. Chennai International fashion week (CIFW) has been formed with an objective to give Indian designers an international arena to showcase and market their collections to world media and global fashion professionals.

The show which will open on December 14 will prove to be a platform to bring in international flavor to the Indian fashion industry. It is likely to witness the participation of around 30 designers, 10 international designers, 40 fashions shows, 60 Indian and international models, world media professionals, Indian and international celebrities as well as buyers from across the globe.

Mr. Gaurav Sharma, Producer of CIFW and CEO of Storm Fashion, while speaking exclusively with fibre2fashion.com and when asked to elaborate about the show, he replied, “This is possibly for the first time that a fashion show is getting organized with a truly international perspective, which will help to bring in a pool of international creative excellence to the Indian fashion market.”

Further he talked about the philosophy to create a destination in India. He said, “India is a place, where Indian and international design talent can be presented at the same location and this combined value created by showcasing best of designs and fashion, can in turn, become a lucrative reason for the buyers to attend the show.”

He added that “Every geographical location has certain unique cultural ethics, for instance, Chennai is a leather hub and small places like Tirupur being very much accessible are showing rapid growth in textile and apparel industry. The event is not only targeting to create a pool of young and fresh fashion talent but also keeping in mind the fact that Chennai is now the only left out major metropolitan city that holds strong potential in terms of making bigger contributions to the Indian fashion industry”.

He concluded his answer by citing CIFW as a buffet, which would certainly be a fashion event more versatile then ever. He said, “Like a buffet can make 3-4 cuisines available at the same time, the CIFW would certainly be presenting a fashion event which would be more versatile”.

Answering our next question about the main focus of the show, Mr. Sharma said, “As of now the focus has been on designers, models, international pageant winners and also at the media fraternity, and as far as the buyers are concerned we have appointed consultants in Dubai, France and London who are doing effective networking with the regular fashion buyers in order to create awareness about the event.”

However, he believes that considering the forthcoming Christmas season, it's difficult to imagine the picture in terms of buyers' presence, but so far the direction is right.

Further when asked to throw some light upon the promotional means, the organizers are planning to makesure that the show reaches a wide audience. Mr. Sharma confirmed that they are tying up with some of the leading and diversified corporate companies, like for print media the show has tied up with times of India, likewise Kingfisher and McDowell, and Arvind Mills from fashion perspective.

All in all CIFW is using internet, print and television media including news channels and lifestyle channels to leave no stone unturned as far as the promotion of the show is concerned.
