The Chairman of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) Gohar Ejaz has warned of going on a nationwide strike if the government tried to put any restriction, curb or quota on the export of yarn.
He has said there was no shortage of yarn despite which industry is being threatened with restrictions, which if implemented, would result in a strike by the nation's 400 odd spinning mills.
He added by saying that, there is a shortage of four million bales of cotton in the country, but even then no restriction on export was initiated, whereas, cotton yarn is in surplus, but still they were threatened by the export restriction.
Meanwhile, the Federal Minister for Textiles, Rana Farooq Saeed Khan said that a special meeting of the Cabinet would be called in the next few days to resolve the prevailing issue of yarn shortage in the country.
He admitted in a senate committee meeting on the textile industry that due to the unprecedented exports of yarn, a shortage has emerged, due to which value added sector of the textile industry has been affected.
He added by saying that, “It is feared that many people would lose their jobs and unemployment would further increase in the country due to the crises, created by the unavailability of yarn.”
