The Government of India has been diligently making efforts to promote country's handloom industry. It imposes handloom cess on excise duty on mill-made fabric. But at the same time, the sector can get a significant boost, if the government makes it obligatory for every licensed textile-mill to establish a handloom unit in its premises, say, experts.

Some amount of the total fabric produced by a textile–mill should compulsorily be handloom, which will prove helpful for handloom-weavers to get employment in the organised sector and fabric produced on handloom also cannot be duplicated by mill produced cloth, experts add by saying.

Offering encouragement to the handloom industry by following above measures can restore the glory of textile and garment export industry in India, which faces stiff competition from China and Pakistan.
