United States Department of Agriculture reported Wool Production and Value Wisconsin's wool production in 2009 totaled 470,000 pounds. Weight per fleece averaged 7.3 pounds, up 0.2 pounds from last year. During 2009, 64,000 sheep were shorn.
The average price for wool sold in 2009 was 50 cents per pound, up 5 cents from 2008.
The value of Wisconsin wool totaled $235,000. Nationwide, wool production totaled 30.9 million pounds in 2009, down 2.10 million pounds from 2008. Sheep and lambs shorn totaled 4.20 million head, down 5 percent from 2008.
The price paid for wool averaged 79 cents per pound, down 20 cents from 2008. The total value of production was $24.4 mil-lion, a decrease of $8.10 million from the previous year.
