'The Textile Heritage of Gujarat' (Gujarati Vastra Kala No Varso), Tapi Collection, has been organized at Garden Art Gallery at Sahara Darwaja in Surat, Gujarat, from February 5, which offers an opportunity to textile experts to experience the luxury of Gujarati textiles.

Along with the creativity and skills of Gujarati artisans and quality fabrics, the 700-year old textile heritage of the state has also been showcased in the exhibition. A personal and rare collection, of Mr. Praful Shah Chairman and Managing Director of Garden Silk Mills and his wife Ms. Shilpa Shah, incorporates textile varieties from softest un-dyed muslins to luxurious brocades.

While speaking about this years' old heritage of Gujarat, Mr. Shah said that state's textile story begins with cotton cultivation, its spinning, weaving and adorning the fabric with beautiful and colourful patterns. Gujarati entrepreneurs have been taking Indian textiles to foreign shores since Romanian era.

An indigo fragment of a 15th century, which is one of the earliest surviving Indian textiles, can be found even now in Egyptian port town of Fustat, added Mr. Shah, whose hunt for the heritage Gujarati textiles, with his wife Shilpa, started 20 years ago.

Gujarat's majestic Kinkhabs and Patolas, beautiful embroideries, Mashrus, colourful bandhanis, painted and block printed fabric as well as patch-worked and beaded textiles are the major attractions among the collection on display in the exhibition.
