One of the finest fibre wool bales is going to be put up for auction next week in Melbourne next week. The ultra-fine merino wool fibre weighing about 100 kilograms and produced at Pyrenees Park in Victoria is expected to be picked by an Indian or Italian buyer.
The fibre of this ultra-fine wool is 11.4 microns. The previous record for the highest bid was set by a wool measuring 11.6 microns and was sold to an Indian bidder for a record amount of $259,000 in June 2008.
There are few textile mills across the world that has the wherewithal to process this ultra-fine wool and it is expected that the fabric spun from the wool would be used in making men's suits. The auction will take place on March 17.
