Launch of a new handicraft centre at Kioa Island has extended a reason to rejoice for the island people, as they now have a centralized location where they can trade their merchandise to lure tourists.
The proposal for setting up this new centre was floated by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation.
Doctor Jiko Luveni, Minister for Social Welfare stated that, an expenditure of about $17,000 has been incurred in respect of the Kioa women's dream project. More so, the handicraft centre would result in a surge of the economic development of women on the island, as they could now earn more, while selling their products locally.
As tourists visit the island every week, the new handicraft centre is acts as a big boost for the local people's economic requirements. Also, such other centres are being constructed at other places like Tacirua village and Lomaivuna in Naitasiri, Waikubukubu village in Ba and Nayau in Lau.
