Govt to revamp leather training centre

May '10
With the intention of reviving training professional's centre in the leather industry, in Mwanza City, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Marketing handed over a centre to the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology.

Florence Turuka, Secretary, Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology, said that, the leather industry had only a handful of domestic experts. Thus, the decision was taken by the government to revamp the training facilities so as to train more experts in the field. This training program will be in association with the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT).

As per the Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Marketing, Dr Shaaban Ramadhan Mwinjaka, the new initiative will help sign up more candidates for their own and the country's benefit.

In addition, dearth of experts in leather technology, was slowly leading to domestically manufactured leather raw materials exported at dirt-cheap rates. Later, these are converted into value-added goods and imported back into the country, avers Dr Mwinjaka.

As the country has been spending huge amounts of money in training experts abroad in leather technology, the minister expects that the revival of the training centre in the country will help resolve the problem of lack of local experts.

Although, the leather training centre was set up by the government in 1984, it failed to enroll candidates due to various problems including financial. It was later given away to Elibariki Mmari, a local investor in 1996 and since then he has been utilizing the centre for the manufacturing of leather products.
