A state-of-the-art 1.3 million metric tons per annum (MTPA) ethylene cracker facility was inaugurated at the Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC) by Ras Laffan Olefins Company Limited (RLOC).
The project which cost US $800 million is a collaboration between the Qatar Chemical Company II Limited (Q-Chem II), Qatofin Company Limited and QP. While Q-Chem II holds 53.31 of primary shares, Qatofin's holding is about 45.69 percent and one percent shares are with QP
With the help of a 133-kilometre pipeline, the ethylene will be transferred from Ras Laffan to Q-Chem II and Qatofin downstream offshoot units in Mesaieed. More so, in Mesaieed, 700,000 MTPA of ethylene will be assigned to Q-Chem II and 600,000 MTPA will be assigned to Qatofin. The ethylene will serve as feedstock for polyethylene and olefins plants of both the companies.
Four years ago, the foundation stone of the ethylene cracker plant was laid in RLIC in the month of May. While the state-of-the-art plant is able to process raw ethane gas so as to manufacture 1.3 million MPTA of ethylene, its production capacity will be further increased to 1.6 million MPTA in its second phase, thereby, making it the world's largest ethylene production plant.
