NITRA hosted seminar emphasizes on technical textiles

The Joint Technological Conference (JTC) is an annual feature of India's premier textiles research associations ATIRA, BTRA, SITRA and NITRA. This is a jointly organized prestigious techno-conference in which delegates from the textile & clothing industry take part. The major technical developments in the field of textile technology, based on the R&D works carried out by four TRAs during the year, are presented and deliberated in the conference.

The 51st edition of this event was hosted by NITRA at PHD House, New Delhi on Saturday, 10th April 2010. This year the papers for presentation were divided into two sessions. In order to showcase the activities carried out by the four Centers of Excellence (CoE) at the TRAs, the first technical session was devoted to Technical Textiles, whilst the other session featured papers on Conventional Textiles.

Sh. Shishir Jaipuria, noted industrialist and Chairman NITRA Council of Administration inaugurated the conference. Also present on occasion were industrialists Sh. K. K. Aggarwal, Chairman, NITRA Research Advisory Committee, Sh. R. L. Nolkha, Dy Chairman, NITRA, Dr. R. C. Jain, Immediate Past Chairman, NITRA and Directors of TRAs Dr. A. K. Sharma (ATIRA), Dr. A. N. Desai (BTRA), Dr. Arindum Basu (SITRA) and Dr. J. V. Rao (NITRA). During the daylong conference, nine technical papers were presented in front of 175 delegates from textiles and clothing industry, academia and textile technology students.

Shri Shishir Jaipuria, Chairman, NITRA, in his welcome address mentioned that, TRAs are the flag-bearers of textile research in India since the independence and they also act as the think-tank for MoT. He expressed happiness over the activities and achievements of the TRAs and informed that the new ideas emerging in JTCs are very helpful for the industry to work on new product development.

While discussing on the industry, he opined that the area of technical textiles is still lagging behind in spite of great demand. He emphasized that efforts should be made to bring in investment in technical textiles. While talking about TRAs contribution to the industry, he urged the MoT to rationalize the financial support to TRAs and create an environment so that TRAs can wholeheartedly concentrate on research works.

Dr.J.V.Rao, Director NITRA while presenting the Directors' Report on behalf of the TRAs, informed that altogether fifty eight R&D projects that are partly funded by the industry, MoT, state governments and other government agencies were under taken by the four TRAs during last one year. The progress and outcome of most of the projects, whether ongoing or completed, were very satisfactory.

He further mentioned that, apart from conventional projects, some interesting areas such as development of less known natural fibres like pineapple fibre, banana fibre, bamboo fibre and milkweed fibre, antibacterial finish of cotton using herbal extracts basil,rind of pomegranate and ajwain seeds, and usage of emerging technologies like plasma treated textiles and nano technology were also taken up for research during the last one year.
