SS Slathia, J&K Minister for Industries and Commerce recently stated that, the government with an eye to offer marketing opportunities to handloom weavers in the state is considering establishment of two haats, first at Sonamarg in Kashmir and the second one at Kathua in Jammu division, with an investment of Rs 44 million.

He also said that, in order to sustain the quality of the handloom goods as well as to ensure that no fake products were tagged and traded as Kashmir brand, it has been decided to also set up a laboratory in the Kashmir Valley to exercise a check over the quality of handicraft products.

Slathia appealed the assembly with several marketing societies' representatives, to focus on the product's quality so as to augment the marketing and adequacy of the products, which is vital to fetch higher returns for handicraft goods.

Moreover, he informed that, the government has also launched several welfare schemes for the craftsmen engaged in the handloom and handicraft sectors, and has appealed the craftsmen to step forward and avail benefit from these schemes.

He divulged that, these schemes envisage benefits like health insurance coverage and scholarships to dependants of the weavers. Also, the concerned government is looking forward to extend every possible help for expansion of this sector.
