Bright prospects for Santa Clara textile company

As the Desembarco del Granma Textile Company starts producing surgical gauze in Santa Clara, the requirement of importing around 36 million square metres of such gauze that the Cuban Health system needs, in order to satisfy the demands made by hospitals, clinics and other healthcare institutes, will be sliced.

Roberto Alfonso Hernández, Director of the Centre, an industrial engineer said that, once they get through with the installation work of all the 64 machines, by end of the year, the factory will be equipped to churn out 45 million square meters of gauze. Thus, as the country's local demands are met with, this import substitution will prevent much of the foreign exchange going out of the economy.

Till now, around 23 best quality looms produced in Spain have been implanted, with a capacity to generate cotton fabrics that is 100 percent shrinkage free and has excellent absorption capacity.

As the gauzes cleared all the meticulous examinations and the first batch of these gauzes was delivered to Havana´s trading entity on June 4, the National-Governmental Centre of Medical Equipment of the Ministry of Public Health also certified the product, informed Magalys Prieto Padilla, Technical Director of the textile company.

Centre's Director even said that, to date they have already sold off 1.07 million square meters of gauze and around 64,000 are impending delivery. They also possess raw materials to manufacture additional 1.20 million meters of gauzes, he added.
