The 45th India International Garment Fair (IIGF), a platform that is bringing highest number of global buyers and garment exporters together, was inaugurated on July 12 by Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, Rita Menon.
Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) had organized this 3-day event in Greater Noida. Menon, while addressing the media, said that India has almost all varieties of fibres.
She further added that, India has a strong textile industry and such events help to strengthen the industry further. Along with weaving and spinning, the entire value chain adds on to the strength of the country's textile industry and the Commerce Ministry of the country is taking steps to make it more firm and stronger.
AEPC Chairman, Primal Udani said that, the association is optimistic regarding achieving the target of $12 billion this year. Witnessing the ongoing labour crisis in China, other nations prefer to source from India, as they feel country like ours is good and thorough in its value chain.
South Africa, Japan and Latin America are the three markets, which the Indian exporters have set their targets on, added Udani. The garment exporters have set a target of US $15 billion by the year 2011-12, although exports had reduced slightly by 2.64 percent, last year, standing at $10.64 billion.
Udani further added that, 36 million man-hours of work is required for each $1 billion worth of exports and demand for raw materials, accessories and logistics generates vibrancy in the entire ecosystem.
Over 300 local garment exporters from across India such as Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Maharashtra had participated in the fair, which spanned across 15,000 sq meters.
