Ghanaian Vice President, John Dramani Mahama recently revealed that, the country's government jointly with the World Bank and the African Development Bank has introduced steps for revival of the country's cotton industry.

He stated that, the government would shortly convene a meeting of the industry stakeholders to fix the highest possible guarantee price for lint cotton to ensure that the cotton farmers get good returns for their produce. Mahama made this announcement during his speech after launching the Ghana Cotton Revival Project at Nanton in the Savelugu/Nanton District.

The revival programme, aimed at once again raising the cotton production which plummeted a few years back, is likely to engage more than 100,000 farmers to boost the current year's cotton production to 30,000 metric tons.

Provision for sufficient finance and a zoning mechanism were cited by Mahama as some of the measures introduced to raise the country's cotton produce.

Pursuant to the revival programme, the three cotton producing regions in the north have been segregated into three zones, namely, North East, North West and North Central.

Further, the Vice President even urged all the District Chief Executives and District Directors of Food and Agriculture to extend their cooperation to all the cotton companies in their zones so as to ensure large scale cotton production in the regions.
