PKR 690.65-mn budget for Pakistan Cotton Committee

The Pakistan Central Cotton Committee (PCCC) recently approved a PKR 690.65-million budget for the fiscal 2017-18. Cotton cess income reduced to PKR 209.60 million in 2016-17 compared to Rs 529.76 million in 2013-14, the committee’s 85th meeting at Islamabad, chaired by minister for commerce and textile industry Muhammad Pervaiz Malik, was informed.

Minister Malik wanted restructuring of the PCCC to enhance its performance in research and development and make it more efficient. He also asked for formulating a committee to formulate a comprehensive research policy to advance cotton varieties for more output.

The meeting was attended by the textile secretary and representatives from the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association, Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association, Karachi Cotton Association and the provincial governments attended, according to Pakistani media reports.

PCCC developed 11 cotton varieties last year, carried out 291 experiments and tested 68 varieties, cotton commissioner Khalid Abdullah told the meeting. (DS)
