Tamil Nadu to frame new textile policy: Chief minister

The Tamil Nadu government would formulate a new integrated textile policy, state chief minister K Palaniswami said in Chennai addressing the National Hand Tex 2017 expo to mark the third National Handloom Day on August 7. State textile minister OS Manian had last week said he would take up the issue of a new policy with the chief minister.
The Tiruppur Exporters' Association (TEA), in a representation made to the chief minister in July, had urged the state government to announce a new textile policy that enhances growth and investment. Palaniswami, however, did not elaborate on the government’s plans.
The weaving industry in the state is the second largest employer after agriculture, he said.
As announced by late chief minister J Jayalalithaa, the government has increased the free power supply to handloom workers from 100 units for two months to 200 units, he said, adding that 964 of the 1156 handloom weavers cooperatives in the state are making profits.
The Indian Texpreneurs Federation (ITF) had last month submitted its suggestions for discussions during State Textile Policy Consultative Committee Meeting. The suggestions included framing a policy to attract and scale up airjet weaving and processing sector investments in the state to strengthen the value chain of manufacturing.
ITF also suggested that the state government should come out with special interest subsidy and capital scheme for forward integration from spinning to next stage of value chain. (DS)
