The cotton imports are supported by the expectation of nominal rise in cotton and cotton-blended yarn production in the country.
The total domestic cotton consumption in Thailand was 800 thousand 480 lb bales in MY 2019-20, which also dropped by 30.63 per cent to 555 thousand 480 lb bales in My 2020-21. It is expected to recuperate slightly in MY 2021-22 to reach 605 thousand 480 lb bales, recording a surge of 9.01 per cent due to slower economic recovery of the nation, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market analysis tool TexPro.
The cotton production of Thailand is not enough to fulfil the domestic demand. Thus, the country’s textile sector is dependent upon the imports. Cotton production remains marginal in Thailand as some other crops such as corn give higher returns compared to cotton.
