The Khalifa Port expansion project, which costs around AED 4 billion, has been officially launched. The project involved the development of the port’s South Quay, Khalifa Port Logistics, and Abu Dhabi Terminals, and was recently inaugurated by UAE’s President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The port has been extended from 2.43 square kilometres to 8.63 square kilometres.

Moreover, Khalifa Port’s quay wall has been lengthened from 2.3 kilometres to 12.5 kilometres. The port now has 21 berths and provides various bespoke services for strategic industries, making it a global deep-water port worth an estimated AED 20.4 billion, according to a press release by Abu Dhabi (AD) Ports Group.

“Khalifa Port Expansion is a major national project that is considered an important addition to the UAE’s ports and logistic services and will further enhance the UAE’s position in the global trade,” said President Al Nahyan. “Khalifa Port and other national ports are important cornerstones to the development and diversification of the national economy.”

The Khalifa Port expansion project is expected to add to AD Port Group’s target of increasing general cargo handling capacity to 25 million tonnes and handling capacity at Khalifa Port to 15 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually by 2030.

Developed from a 4-kilometre-long stretch of reclaimed land and launched in 2012, the port is currently a key hub that serves over 25 container shipping lines, directly linked to more than 70 international destinations. Ranked among the leading five of the global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), Khalifa Port is home to three of the world’s most prominent shipping operators—CSP COSCO, MSC, and CMA CGM.

“Today, Khalifa Port is one of the most advanced deep-water ports in the world. By continuing to expand our operations internationally, we are honouring the memory of the leaders who placed us on the path to progress. We have continued to reach new heights and deliver outstanding results through our expertise and global focus,” said Falah Mohammed Al Ahbabi, chairman of AD Ports Group.
