Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China's northwest has produced more than 5 million tonnes of cotton in 2019, accounting for 84.9 per cent of China's total cotton output during the year. Cotton was planted on about 2.54 million hectares in Xinjiang, constituting 76 per cent of the country's total area, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.In northern Xinjiang, over 90 per cent of cotton fields have adopted mechanised cultivation, as per the department of agriculture and rural affairs of Xinjiang. In southern Xinjiang too, the mechanisation rate of cotton harvesting in increasing every year.
For the last 25 consecutive years, Xinjiang has stood first in China's total cotton output, yield and planting area.
