Synthetic Turf is a magic phrase and it carries a number of expectations from the consumer point of view, it also carries some challenges. The Technical Committee has the task to look into these aspects from a scientific and practical point of view.
Of course the challenge is to propose solutions in those areas where the questions need better answers, thus more knowledge.
Although Synthetic Turf is a relatively young product on the market, the level of technical sophistication is remarkable and the number of standards and test methods developed to define its performances is very high. Many parameters and factors affect the life expectation of Synthetic Turf.
The technical expertise and know-how are essential to meet the requirements and the reliability expected by the market. But we have to improve our knowledge even further to better understand the interactions between the different components exposed to real weather conditions and intensive playing practice.
Weather exposure and wear from intensive playing are the fundamental factors affecting the life expectations for Synthetic Turf. More realistic and accelerated evaluation techniques would be the tools necessary to improve our understanding of the entire systems.
Such evaluation techniques are not yet available and we believe that a lot of work has to be done as an industry to agree on common methods. ESTO is the right platform where such work can be initiated. Together with test institutes, test equipment manufacturers and R&D centres, answers to these fundamental questions can be developed and these are part of the technical challenges that we have to face.
